PEN REST -
TYPE: DUAL
INT002A
BRIEF:
There are many methods to the process of designing and iterating a product. Sometimes the best method is found while exploring what’s in front of you, finding the limits and reactions of the material. The design of this pen rest only required the use of the reclaimed wood, and a spot for 2 pens, the rest of the design flowed from the interaction between tools and material.
TOOLS:
- Rapid sketching and designing from these sketches
- Manufacturing / woodworking
- Chiselling
- Routing / dremeling
- Sanding / finishing / polishing
- SOLIDWORKS & KEYSHOT
- Accurate recreating
- Photorealistic texturing
OUTCOME:
The monolithic product provided a simple spot to store and retrieve one’s pens. The character of the wood really shines through, with the chiselled cavities cutting through the imperfections of the wood. The design floats above the surface it sits on, by using sleek chamfers, reflective undercuts and subtle, non-slip feet. This project provided a satisfying exploration of a material with an intriguing product.
I also created a rendition of the pen rest, using complex saddle curves and smooth geometry
