BRASS TOP

INT003B

BRIEF:

A designer should have a deep understanding of the tools and processes they are expecting to have their products manufactured with. Nothing is more valuable than making a project purely constrained by a single method of manufacture. Using a lathe, how could an intriguing spinning top be made in a repeatable manner?

TOOLS:

- Project prep and planning

- Iterative sketching and form explorations.

- Machining
- Lathe turning
- Finishing, polishing
- custom form tools

- Wood & metal working
- Bespoke individual stands, personalised for each top.

- SolidWorks / Keyshot
- Digital recreation for the purpose of repeatable manufacturing

OUTCOME:

This project has continued through the years to this present day, at time of publishing 6 tops of this design have been produced by my hand, maintaining consistent tolerances. This has been a result of the digital recreation of the project providing easy to replicate dimensions and order of operations. The project has allowed me a depth of understanding of tools and processes that a designer needs to know when considering the objects they intend to manufacture.
